Belgians - 249 Days Without Government

The people of Belgium are saying that they now hold the world record for longest span without having a government set in place. The country and crisis is steered by the 6.5 million dutch speaking and the 4.5 million French speaking. Although they have their differences, they are hoping they all come together to celebrate this very rare occasion. In Ghent, a dutch speaking town, they hope to have 249 people strip their clothes and run naked. They hope to have thousands come and make a party of it. In a little French speaking town of Louvain-la-Neuve, they are having a large celebration as well. This celebration includes free fries, and loads of Belgian beer. They are looking at themselves as being world champions. Minister president of Flanders, Kris Peters believes it is serious that they do not have a federal government but at the same time he is humoured by the actions and the celebrations that are being caused by this.

People are debating whether or not they tied the record of Iraq. Iraq had no government for 249 days but it took an additional 40 days to sort out all the approval. Either way that the record is looked at, it isn't hard to believe that Belgium will surpass them both. Last election it was all caused because it was nearly impossible to keep both linguistic groups of the country happy. The chances of the negotiator figuring this out at all let alone soon seems very slim.

In my opinion, the celebrations going on are humorous but would be much more meaningful if the two linguistic groups put their differences aside and celebrated as one. This would be a big stepping stone and would really contribute in the development of the federal government forming again. With that being said, these issues were put on hold for a day but they must continue to work on regaining their government and become a united country again with both linguistic groups being given equal rights.
