Liberals and NDP Targetting Different Areas

Liberal leader, Michael Ignatieff, wants to set in place a Money grant for kids making the transition from high school to post secondary schooling. This plan would result in every student going to university or college to be given $1000 a year with a maximum of $4000 per student. For low income families, they would be given $1500 a year with a maximum of $6000 per student. The total cost of this project would be 1 billion dollars a year. The money would be funded by the corporate tax cuts being removed. Ignatieff says this entire plan can be set in place by 2012. This plan is in hope to help us become the most educated country in the world.

NDP Leader Jack Layton focused on a different part of our society. Layton is hoping to lower rising household debt and credit card debt. Layton would cap credit at 5 percent plus prime. It would save the average credit card user $60 monthly. Layton says that under Harper, large companies are succeeding but his promise would help the small businesses of Canada to succeed as well.

In both situations, I believe the parties are targeting different ages of our society. They are both very helpful in making our country a better place individually and as a whole. With Ignatieff's promise, it will help bring more kids into college and university and it will help lower the amount of money that post secondary graduates will have to pay back in student loans. I also believe that Layton's promise is one that can really help the growth of small businesses in Canada and will help the profit of those business owners. In the end, the one that will help the betterment of our lives as Canadian citizens depends on who you are and your demographics.
